(93.7 The Fan) - The Steelers quarterback situation isn’t looking too great heading into Sunday and it could last long into the future.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen there is a chance Ben Roethlisberger does not return to play football next season.

On SportsCenter Monday, Mortensen said "I've talked to people who have spoken with him, and he has some doubt whether he's really gonna play football again."

Roethlisberger has been out since the second game of the season when he injured his elbow.

While it is has been known that Roethlisberger’s future depends on how his elbow heals, this is the first report of some seriously doubting a return.

A week ago, The Fan’s Ron Cook briefly spoke with Roethlisberger who told him his recovery was actually ahead of schedule.

So it appears we’ll just have to wait and see.

Mortensen added, the Steelers may try to sign a veteran free agent if Ben can’t return.

Philip Rivers, Eli Manning or Teddy Bridgewater are some of the names floating around.
