Wheeler and Syndergaard are clearly both on the trading block as the Mets look to sell assets at the deadline, but the team could opt to only move one of the righties. According to a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are considering trading Syndergaard and re-signing Wheeler.

The return for Syndergaard should be significantly more valuable than the return for Wheeler. Syndergaard has struggled at times this year, but he’s still only 26-years-old and isn't too far removed from some incredible seasons in the big leagues. A change of scenery could be what he needs to find his form and reach his potential.

Even if the Mets decide to give up on this season, they won’t want to give up on next year. Keeping Wheeler would give them another competent arm for next season, if he can stay healthy. The 29-year-old has had issues with injuries, including a recent trip to the injured list with a shoulder problem.

Wheeler would be a free agent after this year if he stays with the Mets and doesn’t sign an extension. Syndergaard is under contract until 2021.

ESPN's Buster Olney added to Thursday's reporting on Syndergaard. He claims that the Mets are "fully intent" on trading Syndergaard before the deadline.

Brodie Van Wagenen has faced criticism for the makeup of the roster and for the team’s performance this season. Another big offseason is looming for the new general manager.
